Protection and safety have always been priorities for humans. The fires that primitive people made to keep away the predators. The Great Wall the Chinese built to protect themselves from the Mongol hordes. The castles and keeps that the Europeans built to protect themselves from being wiped out by the invading Vikings and other barbarian invasions.
We have a fundamental desire to protect ourselves, the people we love, and the possessions we have, but we no longer do that by building walls or castles.
Today we have paper. There are documents that define our rights of ownership and the protection we claim and pay for. Sadly, a large portion of the adult population either choose not to put these protection documents in place, or simply postpone the doing by saying they are too young, or do not have a need for the available protection. Even business owners and well-educated people seem to believe that they are invulnerable. The National statistics show that more than half of the member of the adult population, do not have a will. 72% to 78% of these people do not have the protection provided by a Power of Attorney. Millions of parents, who have minor children, have not identified or appointed guardians for their minor children.
Then it happens. The vehicle accident or some other accident. A stroke, or dementia, or cancer. And the incidents of these events escalate day by day because of lifestyles and an ever-greater number of vehicles on the roads. If you have not, personally, suffered any of these traumas, then you probably know of family members or friends who have.
How often have you heard someone say, “If only I had known, or had done, whatever.” But regret is a total waste of time, effort, and energy.
